Welcome to Cary Fitzpaine House, the main house in a tiny hamlet comprising of six cottages and a post box. Life is recorded here in the Doomsday Book and it is very peaceful and tranquil.

You will receive a warm and friendly welcome on arrival. Our intention is for you to feel at home and comfortable during your stay with us. We are very happy for guests to stroll around the farm, there is a river running through with plenty of wildlife to see. We have on the farm kingfisher, herons, various ducks, owls, woodpeckers plus numerous other birds, deer, badgers, rabbits and hare etc. We are available to help and advise guests on any sites or activities they are interested in. We have golf available nearby at Wheathill and Yeovil, Riding in Charlton Adam or Sherborne. Own horses may be accommodated.

All our rooms are furnished and decorated to a very high standard and have en-suite or private facilities complete with an excellent selection of toiletries and towels. All rooms also have TV/radio and coffee making facilities. We have a large four-poster bedroom/suite available. We also have a very spacious, well-equipped, self-catering cottage available.

A full breakfast is provided in the large dining room overlooking the gardens. We use either home produced or local products wherever possible. A selection of lighter foods and fruits are also served. There is also a large Drawing Room for guests to relax in and plenty of garden furniture for idling in the sunshine.

The Herschel Museum of Astronomy is dedicated to the many achievements of the Herschels, who were distinguished astronomers as well as talented musicians. It was from this house, using a telescope of his own design that William discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. His observations helped to double the known size of the solar system. Following a tradition of the great astronomers of the Renaissance he pushed forward the science of building telescopes. He was rewarded for his work by King George III, and also received the Copley Medal. Caroline also made a huge contribution to the field of astronomy.

The Saxons, who had been converted to Christianity, conquered the ancient county of Somerset in the 7th Century. Their King was Ine of Wessex, who was widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of the Abbey. He was a local man who boosted the status and income of the Abbey, and it is said that he put up a stone church, the base of which forms the west end of the nave. This church was enlarged in the 10th century by the Abbot of Glastonbury, St. Dunstan, who became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 960.
