Things to see and do in Buckinghamshire

Old Gaol Museum      View website
The museum reflects 3 aspects of the local past: The story of the Old Gaol, Buckingham's heritage and the Soldiers of the County. It occupies both floors of the old cell block, and extends into the original prisoners' exercise yard now covered with a state-of-the-art glass roof and housing an education resource centre. Upstairs - local geology, archaeology, and the story of the town from Anglo-Saxon to Edwardian times. Downstairs - original furnished cell, communications, industry, the county's soldiers and the Civil War in Buckingham.

Hell Fire Caves
Go underground into the hell-Fire caves for a special day out. Excavated by Sir Francis Dashwood in the 1750’s, these extraordinary caves were reputed to have hosted the Hell-Fire Club whose membership included some of Britain’s most senior aristocrats and statesmen. A tour of the caves takes you past various small chambers to the Banqueting Hall, down over the River Styx to the Inner Temple, which is about 300feet beneath the church at the top of the hill. Special events for families are held in the summer and at Halloween.

Hartwell House      View website
Hartwell House is a magnificent stately home standing in ninety acres of landscaped parkland just 40 miles north west of London, and was restored between 1987 and 1992 by Historic House Hotels Ltd, to join its sister hotels Middlethorpe Hall in York and Bodysgallen Hall in North Wales.

Between 1809 and 1814 the owner of the house, Sir Charles Lee, let the mansion to exiled King Louis XVIII of France. The arrival of the impoverished king and his court at Hartwell was not a happy experience for the mansion, with once grand and imperious courtiers farming chickens and assorted small livestock on the lead roofs. The King signed the document accepting the French crown in the library of the house.

It is set in rural countryside yet only one hour from central London and Heathrow and Luton Airports, and is an ideal place for a few days' relaxation. The hotel also lends itself to quick city breaks, or as a base for exploring Oxford, the Cotswolds, and the Chiltern Hills. An overnight stay at Hartwell is a good way to overcome jetlag on arrival in Britain, or as a memorable place to stay before leaving the UK. The hotel is a popular venue for top level Special Events as well as Spa relaxation.

This Gallery, opened in 1962, is dedicated to the life and work of Sir Stanley Spencer RA (1891-1959) and stands as a lasting memorial to the man who became synonymous with the village of Cookham. It has a wonderful collection of more than 100 of his paintings and drawings. In 2007 the Gallery was awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which enabled the former Methodist chapel to be transformed into a stunning exhibition space. Two exhibitions are held each year. There is a fine archive of photographs, books and other written material.
