‘Good trade’ at Bishops Castle sale of breeding sheep

Auctioneers Halls reported a “good trade” with buyers from near and far at a highly successful sale of 6,000 breeding sheep held at the Love Lane site in Bishops Castle last Friday.

For the 18th year, the Andrew Lawton Cup was presented for the best pen of Welsh Mule yearling ewes. Expertly judged by Cyril Owen, the first and second prizes were awarded to H.E. Rogers and Sons of Dolfawr with the first prize pen fetching £156 per head and the second not far behind at £141 per head.

Overall averages were as follows: Yearling ewes £130 per head to a maximum £158 for A. J. Tortoriello, Llangunllo. Two-year-old ewes £122 per head to a maximum £136 for E. Davies and Son, Frodesley. Three to four-year-old ewes £101 per head to a maximum £114 for B. Williams, Hill End. Stock ewes £63 per head to a maximum £106 for K. J. & D. M. Burton, Longville. Ewe lambs £81 per head to a maximum £102 for J. A. Wood and Sons, Kinnerton.

Rams £310 per head to a maximum £483 for R. T. Edwards, Westbury.

Other leading prices were as follows: Yearling ewes: Suffolks, which averaged £134: £154 R. J. Pryce, The Broads. Welsh Mules, which averaged £127: £156 H. E. Rogers and Son, Dolfawr. Texels, which averaged £136: £158 A. J. Tortoriello, Llangunllo. Lleyn, which averaged £126: £144 W. H. and A. Cooke, Hardwick.

Two-year-old ewes: £136 E. Davies, Frodesley. Three to four-year-old ewes: £114 B. Williams, Plowden. Stock ewes: K. J. and D. M. Burton, Longville. Ewe lambs: £102 J. A, Wood and Sons, Kinnerton. Rams: £483 for a Texel from R. T. Edwards, Westbury.
