A Butchery? - Granted!
Tenant farmers from a Kent farm are absolutely delighted with the recent completion of their development plans for a livestock building and butchery facility on site.
Their delight is particularly gratifying as a grant of £68k was permitted for the development costs of the butchery from the Rural Development Programme for England which has funds available for various rural grants.
Graham and Miranda Palmer of Farmer Palmer Products Ltd in Ashford, Kent, reared pigs, sheep and cattle meat which they then sent to a local butcher in a nearby village who prepared the meat for them to sell through local farmers markets, directly to the customer.
When news of the butchers retirement surfaced, plans to build their own butchery facility grew and Acorus Rural Property Services Ltd were commissioned to carry out the planning work and grant application.
Regional Development Agencies are currently responsible for creating their own grant schemes aligned with their regional priorities and Matt How, Business Consultant for Acorus successfully obtained a grant for his clients which funded their on-site butchery facility.
There were no buildings on the land Mr and Mrs Palmer were planning to use and Matt How applied firstly for an access route, then for planning for a livestock building and finally permission to convert part of the building into a butchery. All three applications were successful and with the grant money in support, they were able to go ahead with their plans.
The new facility now means that all their livestock and meat can be stored and prepared on-site, a provision also used by local farmers and a local butcher is employed.
This is a true success story and as Matt How comments ’To obtain planning permission in itself is a happy achievement for our clients but to win them some grant funding is the icing on the cake. From a professional viewpoint, it is encouraging to see such National programmes in place supporting rural developments.’
