Agriculture at heart of Newark county show

The lure of an agricultural-based county show has secured the support of an East Midlands farm machinery supplier.

Adrian Johnston, chief executive of Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society is delighted that the well established firm of Marsh, with branches across the region, is throwing its weight behind the 2011 Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show (14 and 15 May).

He said: "Marsh is making a welcome return as a trade exhibitor to the show, and, I am pleased to report, has written to over 650 of its clients, encouraging them to support the event."

In his letter, General Manager Gordon Cummings says: "We strongly believe that County shows are still a good vehicle for companies like ours to show our machinery and to meet existing and, hopefully, new customers and their families.

"We all want the show to be a success so we all have to help and support it. We are pleased to be playing our part, and we hope that many of our customers will support it too," he continued.

Adrian Johnston added: "The 2011 Show President, Tony Strawson, has proactively led an initiative to restore agriculture as the focal point of the County Show. Through his personal approaches we have received extremely positive feedback and we are delighted to have Marsh exhibiting once again at Newark. I applaud Gordon Cummings’s invitation to Marsh’s clients and hope they will support him in return.

"We would, of course, be delighted to welcome other agricultural machinery companies to the show as, without their support some might feel that the show is veering away from its core values. Nothing could be further from the truth as livestock entries have increased year-on-year and we have over 4,500 entries for the 2011 show. Given the austere times in which we live this continued rise in exhibitor numbers is proof that agriculture remains central to the show."

Building on its growing success, the Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show continues to innovate and this year has introduced a Farriers’ Competition which will be judged by twice World Champion Farrier, Steven Beane AWCF.

Adrian Johnston continued: "As a further mark of our agricultural core the President will be awarding medals to no less than 24 people, who have a total of 967 years’ service to the industry, in the Main Arena on Sunday afternoon. He will also present Educational Grants worth a total of £5,000 to college students who are planning to base their future careers within the county of Nottinghamshire.

"We provide an entertaining and fun-packed event at Newark with something for everyone, and have never lost sight of the fact that agriculture is at the heart of all we do. The President’s initiative has helped refocus our aims to others and produced a positive result."
