Bayer breeding addresses growing pressures on OSR

Growing consistently high-yielding OSR crops under higher pest, disease and environmental pressure will be the talking point of Bayer’s hybrid breeding display at Cereals 2015.

With seed treatment choice restricted, the use of drilling date, sowing rate, variety choice and well-timed insecticide sprays will need to be considered carefully, says Sarah Middleton, Seeds Product Manager for Bayer CropScience. “Planting hybrids, such as Fencer and Harper, which are more resilient to environmental pressures, is one important area we’ll be there to demonstrate.”

Harper, Bayer’s first OSR hybrid in the UK, is a proven high yielder with early vigour that also helps simplify disease control. With its multigene Phoma resistance growers can ensure timing of light leaf spot (LLS) sprays, such as Proline275 (prothioconazole), is not compromised. And with robust LLS resistance too it’s suitable for all regions of the UK.

New on the 2015/16 HGCA Recommended List, Fencer is an exceptionally vigorous hybrid with inherent sowing date flexibility and the resilience to perform when conditions get tough. Its consistently high gross output is driven by market-leading oil content.

This year growers will see the first UK variety coming from Bayer’s InVigor development pipeline: InVigor 1030. Currently in second year National List trials InV 1030 offers an outstanding disease resistance package – Phoma and LLS – combined with high gross output.
