Brexit will make food imports cheaper, former UKIP leader Nigel Farage has said.

During an exchange on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Mr Farage claimed food imports will be 'much cheaper' as the UK opens itself up to the world.

But Lib Dem leader Tim Farron, who was on the show with Mr Farage, said Brexit was a 'massive risk for Great Britain' as the issue of prices of food on the shelves was of a massive significance.

"We can get rid of the common external tariff and buy cheaper food," Mr Farage said.

"Cheaper butter, lamb from New Zealand, there are lots of opportunities."

Mr Farron said the UK was going to turn its back on the biggest market in the world.

The Lib Dem leader along with Welsh Lib Dem leader Mark Williams recently launched the 'not a penny less' campaign to secure farm subsidies post-Brexit.

"Farmers making decisions now about buying livestock and investing for the future are being left in the dark about what will come after 2020," said Mr Farron.

"I am calling on the government to reassure farmers that they are not going to face cuts to the support they rely on after 2020."

The party released details in conjunction with Defra data released earlier in the year which shows a stark warning regarding the amount of farms that could go out of business without necessary subsidies.
