The Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, has presented Lord Clinton and John Varley of Clinton Devon Estates with a third Queen’s Award for Enterprise at a ceremony at the organisation’s Rolle Estates Office headquarters in East Budleigh East Devon.
Clinton Devon Estates is one of Devon’s oldest family businesses, specialising in sustainable land and property management. This year’s award, in the category of Sustainable Development, is Clinton Devon Estates’ third consecutive Queen’s Award. It first received the award in 2005, again in 2010 and now holds the 2015 Queens Award for the next five years.
Clinton Devon Estates can trace its history back to 1299. Today it manages 25,000 acres across East and North Devon and is involved in farming, sustainable forestry, deer management, commercial and residential property and a number of small businesses including the South West’s premier equestrian venue, Bicton Arena.
Estates Director John Varley said: “At Clinton Devon Estates, short-term economic success has never been the main criteria in the way we lead our organisation. Our focus is firmly on stewardship and handing over something more valuable to the next generation; creating value while improving the physical and social environment.
“Between 2010 and 2014 we estimate that revised working practices and recycling have saved over 35,000 road miles, produced over 100,000 kilowatt hours of electricity from renewable sources, supplied 8,000 tonnes of biomass and over forty million litres of natural water. Collectively this is equivalent to a saving of over 4,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions.”
