Dairies keep going to deliver the white stuff
Farmers, tanker drivers, processors and milkmen sent out a message to snow-bound Britain this week – we still deliver. They triumphed over the snow to keep dairy products on the table.
As National Dairy Week began on Monday, record snow falls did little to prevent the milk getting through, despite widespread traffic chaos and nationwide shutdowns. Doorsteps the length and breadth of the UK saw their usual orders of milk delivered on time, as did supermarkets and corner shops.
Jim Begg, Director General of Dairy UK, said: "Waking up to see the world blanketed in white earlier this week, many will have thought ’no milk today’.
"But for the nation’s dedicated milkmen, tanker drivers, processors and dairy farmers, there was no question of staying in bed. UK consumers love their milk and dairy products, and the whole sector worked hard this week to make sure the milk got through.
"It takes more than snowdrifts, ice storms and treacherous conditions to prevent the nation from getting its favourite White Stuff, especially during National Dairy Week."
