DAIRY UK SUPPORTS EC'S NUTRIONAL LABELLING PLAN

Dairy UK strongly supports the key elements of the European Commission's proposal to introduce mandatory nutritional labelling on food.

We endorse Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou's call for EU-wide adoption of system similar to the Guideline Daily Amounts already used by much of the UK's food industry.

Responding to the draft Food Labelling Regulation, adopted by the Commission yesterday (30 January), Dairy UK director-general Jim Begg said:

"Like Commissioner Kyprianou, Dairy UK believes that GDA-style systems provide consumers with the clearest and most effective labelling tool to help them achieve a balanced diet.

"We, like the European Commission, also consider that the FSA's multiple traffic light system is too simplistic. Although easy for consumers to use, it is not helpful in achieving a balanced diet.

"I hope the UK government and the Food Standards Agency will take the Commissioner's views fully into account when conducting their forthcoming consultation on different labelling systems. It would be a mistake if the UK were to fall out of step with the rest of Europe on this."

Dairy UK will make a full assessment of the proposal once it is available.
