Dairy farmers set to target mobility

West Wales dairy farmers are set to benefit from hands on practical advice on how to overcome any mobility problems within their herds.

The large scale event titled "Targeting Mobility" has been designed to provide farmers with an abundance of information relating to lameness and mobility issues.

Guest speakers Roger Blowey and Nick Bell will be sharing their wealth of knowledge on the subject in order to help farmers reduce the incidence of lameness within their herds as well as providing guidance on how best to treat various infections.

Dairy health events officer Dylan Jones says: "Dairy cow mobility is something that is incredibly important, not only from a welfare point of view but also when you start to consider the treatment costs and subsequent milk losses associated with treating lame cows.

"Indeed, an economic review of cattle lameness found that the average case of lameness costs £323.47, which is a highly significant figure in anybody’s business."

The event which will take place at Carmarthen Showground, Nantyci, Carmarthen on 29 September at 11am, will also include foot trimming demonstrations by the National Association of Cattle Foot Trimmers as well as a variety of mobility and foot trimming related trade stands.

Dylan adds: "The Mastitis event we held last year on the Showground was very well received with the 200 people that were present providing positive feedback in terms of speakers and quality of the event. We are therefore looking forward to providing another first class event for Welsh Dairy Farmers."
