Daniel Fairburn, Managing Director of LJ Fairburn & Son Ltd, has been presented the ‘Clive Frampton Young Poultry Person of the Year’ Award at the Egg and Poultry Industry Conference (EPIC) held at the Celtic Manor Resort near Newport, South Wales.

Candidates for this year’s trophy had to be less than 40 years old and could be from any part of the egg and poultry supply chain. The award recognises an individual who has made a significant impact on their own business and a contribution to the wider industry. The award, which was established in memory of the late Clive Frampton of the Frampton’s egg processing business, was presented at the glittering formal banquet following this year’s Egg and Poultry Industry Conference.

Daniel Fairburn has stood out from the crowd for his intuition and enthusiasm for the industry and astute business skills that have led the business through dramatic transformation and expansion. Daniel was admired for his passion for chicken farming and his drive and commitment in changing the business model in a very short space of time to enable the company to market their eggs independently to major retailers.

The business is now one of the largest egg producers, packers and suppliers in the UK, delivering 34,000 cases of Class A eggs to retail every week and has successfully secured contracts with eight major retailers. In the last five years the business has increased turnover by an outstanding 500% and during the same time has re-invested more than £19m back into the business to preserve and secure its longevity and sustainability for future generations.

Even from a very young age farming has been in Daniel’s blood - he has always loved working with the chickens and this remains his focus today.

Speaking about his award success, Daniel Fairburn said; “Firstly and foremost, I would like to thank my team of 180 staff who show such drive, passion and commitment to the poultry industry. Without their hard work, we would not have been able to make such significant changes to our family business – to a level where we are today supplying major retail direct and delivering more than 13 million eggs every week!

Bird welfare is essential to everything that the Fairburn business does. Strong, happy, stress-free birds are Daniel’s number one priority. Birds are checked three times a day to monitor their welfare, nutrition and mortality. Daniel is always out on-site, getting involved in the farm duties, checking bird welfare across all farms and going out at midnight to move and vaccinate chickens.

He would never let the staff do anything that he isn’t willing to do himself. Under Daniels leadership, Fairburn’s strive to reach the highest standards; all of the units are accredited by Freedom Foods, British Lion, the Organic Food Federations and Woodland Trust for applicable type of production method while the mill and feed is UFAS-approved.
