Deputy Welsh Minister salutes best in Gower Show

Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, Rebecca Evans visited the Gower Show, at Penrice Castle Park in Reynoldston this weekend and was full of praise for the quality on offer and the warm reception received.

The Minister was given a tour of the showground which included an opportunity to visit the sheep and cattle lines and to talk to their keepers. The Minister also met with Wales YFC and the NFU Cymru and was able to visit the Food Hall where she had the chance to try some of the fabulous local food on offer.

The Deputy Minister said: “I had an excellent time at the Gower Show.

"I was really impressed by the quality of the livestock on show, and it was great to see the enthusiasm of the children competing in the young handlers categories.

“Shows such as the Gower Show provide a good opportunity for me to talk to farmers directly about issues facing their individual farm businesses and the industry more widely.

"The Gower Show also provides locals and tourists alike with the opportunity to have a fun family day out, enjoy some fantastic locally produced food and drink, and find out a little bit more about how the produce reaches our dining tables.

“Welsh food and drink is among the best in the world. We have unique brands that are respected and recognised across the world, and I am working to increase our markets, both here and overseas. We also have some of the finest farmers in the world and the Gower Show is another opportunity for those in rural Wales to show the rest of the country – and the world – all we have to offer.”

The Gower Show, now in its 98th year, is a traditional agricultural show and a chance for local farmers to meet and display examples of their best stock and produce.

Horses are a popular draw at the Gower Show and attract a high standard of competition in over 90 classes of horse showing sections.

Other highlights for the public at this year’s Show include a Police Dog Handlers display, falconry, and equestrian displays, as well as food and drink displays from local producers.
