The Farmers' Union of Wales welcomed visitors to the Cardiff Country Fair last weekend (27-28 September) with a taste of rural life and food production.

FUW staff and officials distributed organic milk generously, donated by Daioni, and helped children decorate pots and plant seeds.

Children were also encouraged to help decorate farm animals to fill in the FUW 'meadow', in a bid to bring the countryside closer to those who live in towns and cities.

"Cardiff Castle opened its grounds to the second country fair which showcased the essence of rural Wales and celebrated the best of farming, food and the countryside and what a successful event it was ," said FUW president Emyr Jones.

The FUW handed out free cotton bags to highlight the international year of the family farm during the event and were joined by staff from FUW Insurance Ltd, Keep Wales Tidy, and Ty Hafan children's hospice.

FUW policy officer Helen Ovens dressed as a 'Queen Bee' highlighted the importance of pollinators, with activities for children, a 'virtual' hive, and information about honey bees and beekeeping for both adults and youngsters.

Mr Jones added: "Cardiff Country Fair was again an exciting event which promotes a closer understanding between food producers and consumers. It combined a great day out with learning more about the countryside, food and its producers.

"We attended the inaugural event last year and this year it was even better as the event steadily grows and had great fun as children of all ages enjoyed the 'how quick can you pick' competition run by Keep Wales Tidy.

"Our attendance at the Cardiff Country Fair is important in helping to rebuild the links between food producers and consumers and we all benefit from a greater understanding of each other."
