Farmers urge retailers to commit to Welsh lamb

Farmers in Anglesey are calling on retailers to commit to promoting their Welsh lamb during this year's peak season.

During the recent Anglesey NFU Cymru county meeting, lamb producers were concerned that some retailers are already not giving Welsh PGI spring lamb prominence in their stores and are not promoting it as well as they could do to customers.

Those present called on retailers to back the Welsh sheep industry through;

• Giving PGI Welsh lamb pride of place on their shelves

• Helping consumers to choose Welsh by clear product labelling and placement

• Promote that our lamb is now in season and has a wonderful delicate flavour and is succulent and tender in texture.

Anglesey NFU Cymru County Chairman, Christine Jones, said, “As June approaches fresh, tender and delicious Welsh PGI lamb is becoming increasingly available and retailers need to commit to its sourcing.

“This year has been an excellent season for lamb, and we need this to be reflected on retailers’ shelves. We want to see our world leading PGI Welsh lamb promoted by all retailers.

“We know that consumers want to buy it – so let’s see our lamb given pride of place on the shelves, with clear labelling and product placement, so consumers can easily identify our product.”

NFU Cymru has recently written to all the retailers seeking clarification on their sourcing and is now meeting major retailers on a weekly basis to press home these points.

Christine Jones ended, “NFU Cymru will be closely monitoring the situation, as it has done in recent years, and will not shy away from highlighting any retailer that is failing to show commitment to our lamb when it is in plentiful supply.

"Similarly, where we see good practice with a retailer clearly backing PGI Welsh lamb and showing their support for Welsh farmers, then the Union will look forward to being able to shine a spotlight on them, we all very much hope that this will be the case.”
