Defra Minister Liz Truss MP has given her backing to the joint NFU and FACE (Farming and Countryside Education) ‘Why Farming Matters’ education packs for Primary Schools.
The resource will crucially show children and young people across England and Wales where food comes from and the role farming has on their lives, whilst also providing accurate and up to date information about modern agriculture which follows the minister’s public challenge to get more materials into schools at last year’s NFU annual conference.
NFU Vice President and FACE trustee Guy Smith said: “Our Why Farming Matters education packs will provide interactive, accurate and balanced information about our industry which will lay the foundations on which the next generation of agricultural workers can build.
“The packs had previously received a 5 star rating from the Times Education Supplement (TES), but in light of the minister’s comments last year, we recognized that a revamp was in order. By introducing new interactive web content and making the pack even more cross-curricular this updated version will be a valuable asset for schools across the UK.”

“I am pleased the NFU have developed these Why Farming Matters packs which will be a valuable resource to teachers and teaching staff across the UK and long-term will provide a solid learning platform for youngsters interested in farming and agriculture.”
Teachers will be able to download the videos directly for use with pupils and in an era when classroom resources are increasingly being charged for, this FREE resource will be appealing to all key stage 2 pupils and staff.
