The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) of Ireland has confirmed that farming is the country's most dangerous profession.

21 people have lost their lives in farm accidents in 2016, nine of these were men over the age of 65.

Most recently, an 84-year-old man died in a farming accident in Galway.

This is an increase of three on the year before, when 18 people lost there lives while working in the Irish agricultural sector.

29 people were killed due to agricultural accidents in the UK during a one year period from 2015 to 2016, according to annual statistics released earlier this year by the Health and Safety Executive.

The Health and Safety Executive has called on all sectors to learn lessons to ensure workers return home safe from work.
