Farmwatch scheme attracts a lot of interest

Police officers working in rural areas of north Powys have linked with colleagues at NFU Cymru to bring a Farmwatch service to local farmers.

Set up in February of this year, the Farmwatch scheme in the Llanfyllin and Welshpool area warns farmers of any local crime and offers crime prevention advice. Members of the scheme receive alerts and text messages to advise them of any suspicious activity in the rural and outlying areas, mostly relating to people and vehicles.

Welshpool NFU Cymru Group Secretary, Steve Kenyon said, “There has been a good take up of this scheme by local farmers and crime is being prevented as a result. 185 farmers are now members of the scheme but we are always looking for more new members to join.

“In order for us to eliminate rural crime altogether, all farmers must work together. With everyone working together it will allow us to have extra eyes and ears on the ground looking out for the culprit.”
