Key issues facing the future of farming will be on the agenda when the newly formed NFU Cymru Next Generation Policy Group meets for the first time next week in Cardiff.
Comprising of 21 young farmers from all corners of Wales, the members represent all of Wales’ main farming sectors. Each member was chosen because of their keen interest, passion and expertise in the industry and their views will be a valuable contribution to long-term NFU Cymru thinking.
Held in Cardiff, the meeting will be an opportunity for the members of the group to consider key policy issues that they see need to be addressed to help ensure that they can be an integral part of a productive, progressive and profitable industry in Wales.
NFU Cymru President, Stephen James, said, “This group is so important for the future of the farming industry. Ensuring NFU Cymru hears the thoughts and ideas of the next generation of farmers, the people who will be at the heart of the industry in the future is absolutely vital.
“Engaging with the next generation of farmers and growers, and bringing them into the fold to discuss the issues that we will face in the coming years means as an organisation, we will be better prepared to cope with the challenges that come our way.
“We are really pleased that so many people wanted to take part in the group. NFU Cymru believes the future of agriculture is dependent on good young farmers, driving forward innovation and improving competitiveness in each sector.”
The group will be addressed by Pearce Hughes, Agricultural Development Manager at ASDA Stores Ltd, who will give the group an overview of the retail sector and will discuss ASDA supply chain relationships.
Euryn Jones, Regional Agriculture Director for HSBC Bank, will also give the group a global perspective on agricultural commodity markets and look at the opportunities offered by growing global consumer demand, as well as provide an insight into the banking perspective on the impacts of volatile markets on farming businesses.
Stephen James concluded, “We are also delighted to have Rebecca Evans AM, Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, in attendance for our first meeting and we look forward to an interesting and lively discussion as to how we can work together to support the next generation of farmers in Wales.”
