Flour producers up supply of home grown wheat

Official statistics confirm that UK flour producers have upped the proportions of home grown wheat milled, at the expense of imported wheat, making the most of this season’s ample supply of good quality milling wheat.

The latest statistics on UK cereal usage released by Defra this morning indicated that the amount of imported wheat milled in November 2014 (85Kt) was the lowest in nine months, down almost 50% on the amount of imported wheat milled during August.

Also, the proportion of home grown wheat in grist in November represented an almost two and a half year high, at 86%. Home grown wheat milled during the season to date, at 2.3Mt (July – November), was the highest volume used in four years. This is perhaps not surprising given that the last published trade data (December) had shown a large drop off in UK wheat imports and revealed that the UK was once again a net exporter of wheat.
