Gearing up for the show season

THE finishing touches are being made for the first big event in the region’s annual show season.

The 32nd North Yorkshire County Show is held on Sunday, June 20, at Otterington Hall, between Northallerton and Thirsk. The entertainment starts at 8am and an action-packed day of events continues until the now traditional tug-of-war contest final at 5pm.

Top of the bill this year are stunt horse displays by the daredevil team from Rockin’ Horse Productions, while the H & M Dog Display Team will wow and amuse the crowds with its entertaining canine antics. An alpaca demonstration will provide an extra exotic dimension on the day, introducing these South American llama-like animals.

Hounds from the Hurworth Hunt will also provide a main ring attraction, alongside other familiar favourites such as show jumping and heavy horses, traction engines, classic cars and motorcycles, classes for cattle, sheep, poultry (the show is the largest summer poultry show in Northern England), rabbits and ferrets, driving classes, horticulture and produce, arts, crafts, photography and the children’s classes, which include entries from local schoolchildren.

All appetites will be met, with regional food and drink showcased in the Yorkshire Food Marquee, trade stands, wide-ranging catering and a real ale bar supported by Nick Stafford’s Hambleton Ales. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Swale Valley Stompers.

Over the years, the show has come to be regarded as a dress rehearsal for the Great Yorkshire and Highland shows later in the summer.

Joint secretary Len Cragg said the North Yorkshire event had grown into a big success in its own right, with as many as 12,000 people coming through the gates last year.

"It’s been great to see the show grow and improve each year, and 2010 will be no exception," he said. "With something for everyone, old and young, it provides a great value day out in lovely surroundings."

Show schedules and advance tickets are available now, priced £5 for adults, students and senior citizens – under fives go free – offering a significant saving over the on-the-day adult ticket price of £8 (concs £5). Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on leads at all times.
