New-generation McCormick tractors will be in action at Grassland UK in Somerset on Thursday, May 7th with visitors to the event being given the first opportunity to see additions to the growing range for the first time.

On the Vicon working demonstration plot, McCormick X7 Pro Drive four- and six-cylinder tractors will be operating mowers singly and in combinations, fixed and variable chamber round balers, and a baler-wrapper combination.

The X7 Pro Drive range, spanning 143hp to 212hp maximum outputs, has new electronics options this year, including an impressive 12in touch-screen terminal with isobus compatibility for setting up the tractor and controlling implements, a fast-steer system to reduce arm twirling for lock-to-lock manoeuvres, and built-in satellite guidance for hands-off steering.

The new X6 design will make it working debut operating a Vicon bale wrapper. The X6 line expands to three models this year with the addition of the X6.440 with 130hp from its FPT four-cylinder engine for draft work and up to 140hp for road travel and driving pto-powered implements.

A bigger choice of transmission and pto configurations are among features distinguishing the X6 from its X60/MC predecessors, along with the new cab and controls, and the front axle and cab suspension options.

‘Standard’ versions have gear pump hydraulics while the ‘LS’ models have load-sensing variable flow hydraulics with increased oil pumping performance and 38in wheels for more challenging applications.

On the McCormick static stand, GB distributor AgriArgo UK plans to exhibit a long wheelbase model in the X6 line-up, which provides a ‘mechanical’ alternative to the more sophisticated four-cylinder models in the X7 Pro Drive range. Power outputs are similar at 143hp, 163hp and 176hp but in place of the X7’s 24x24 transmission with four-speed powershift and electronic hydraulic spool valves, the X6 LWB tractors have synchro or power shuttle transmissions, optional three-speed powershift and mechanical valves.

The new McCormick X5 range will be represented to highlight its more spacious new cab with improved all-round visibility and upgraded controls and instruments. Beneath the cab and ‘family-look’ hood styling, the X5 also provides increased oil flow and a larger fuel tank than its X50 Series predecessor.

There is a choice of eight models – power outputs with a synchro shuttle for the 24x12 or 32x12 with creep transmissions get 85hp, 95hp, 102hp and 113hp. But power shuttle versions have a ‘power boost’ feature that lifts those outputs on the first three models to 95hp, 102hp and 113hp for pto and transport work.

A new X4 tractor will also be on display, representing a size of tractor not previously available with the ‘McCormick’ name on its flanks. There are seven models in the range, starting at 64hp with the diminutive X4.20C and climbing to 107hp from the slightly larger, longer-wheelbase X4.70 model.

There are four ‘C’ versions, including a 75hp ‘price leader limited edition’ powered by a 4.4-litre Perkins engine that meets earlier, less demanding emissions rules. The other three – at 64hp, 69hp and 76hp – are among the first tractors to use a new 2.9-litre Deutz compact four-cylinder motor that meets current exhaust emissions standards.
