Low price biofuel from Poland threatening EU market

Biofuel groups say they are concerned about 'flagrant breaches' of EU law as Polish exporters are accused of distorting the EU market and undercutting sellers in other member states.

Recent reports by the European Biodiesel Board claimed that some exporters active in the Polish market are taking advantage of unfair discounts granted by Polish law.

The EBB recently alerted other member states within the EU on the trade distortions.

Poland is one of the EU’s biggest producers of biofuels, with production estimated at around 30 million litres per month.

The discounts are allowing them to export biodiesel that has been officially, but according to the EBB, unfairly declared as blended with gasoil sold in Poland.

An inquiry is to be opened on the practice, which is beaching EU and national laws, the EBB said.

EBB President Alain Brinon, said: "We are deeply concerned by such a flagrant breach of the EU law and its principles. We are highly committed to stropping the flow of Polish biodiesel, which is disruptive to the integrity and competitiveness of the EU biodiesel market.

"We will actively strive to identify the source of the problem, as well as find effective solutions that will keep the EU internal market for biodiesel united and functioning at a level playing field again."
