MEPs will debate a motion tomorrow asking for the European Commission to look again at mandatory labelling for meat and dairy products in processed foods.

The NFU have written to all MEPs to encourage them to take part in the debate and to vote in favour of a motion which will take place on Thursday 12th May.

The Commission has previously rejected the option to extend the requirement for mandatory origin information to processed foods, but MEPs believe consumers want more.

This is especially the case for dairy, where consumers want to buy British milk, cheese, cream, butter and yoghurt, and want to know where the milk for them was produced.

However the current labels are confusing and don’t always offer the clarity required.

Some retailers already offer this information to the consumer, but not all parts of the supply chain do.

"We hope that the Commission engage with MEPs to progress the debate, and any resulting legislation is clear and accurate," the NFU said.
