European Milk Board (EMB) milk producers have appointed the existing Executive Committee to another term in office, at the spring Members' Assembly in Brussels.

This is an important signal - especially in light of the difficult market situation - for the EMB to consistently keep at its efforts in favour of farmers.

The problematic prices all across the EU were the main topic at the two-day meeting, clearly showing that the milk market continues to remain in an imbalanced state in numerous countries.

The current overproduction keeps milk producers at the mercy of purchasers.

The EMB said: "It is clear that the issue of volumes can only be addressed collectively across Europe.

"Farmers are ready to do this. This does not mean reintroducing the old quotas, but setting up a crisis management programme that can restore market balance in such difficult times.

"The participants at the Members' Assembly unanimously agreed that the conclusions of the Agriculture Council on March 14 towards voluntary volume reduction must be implemented quickly.

"The positive change in the position of German policy-makers was expressly welcomed.

"Besides stakeholders like milk producers and dairies that are directly addressed by the measures, policy-makers also have a responsibility to promote voluntary volume reduction.

"Sufficient funds should be provided for the same.

"Should there be no real improvement in the market situation in the foreseeable future, European milk producers need to demand more comprehensive measures."
