NFU President, Meurig Raymond and NFU Cymru Pembrokeshire County Chairman, Mike Plumb, will start the press briefing with a photo opportunity. They will unveil a large display of a Welsh Dragon made entirely out of Puffin Produce.
Pembrokeshire Show sits bang in the middle of the ‘A’ level and GCSE results days. NFU Cymru wants to use this important time when young people are considering their futures to encourage them to think positively about a future career in the agricultural industry and help secure the future of farming in Wales – whether they are from a farming background or not. NFU Cymru is therefore using the show to launch its new campaign aimed at moving the Welsh agricultural industry forward with a video and accompanying bilingual electronic booklet. These will be launched during the press briefing by NFU Cymru President, Stephen James and Deputy President, John Davies.
NFU Cymru’s President, Stephen James, a local dairy farmer, is using Pembrokeshire County Show to remind farmers of impending changes to rules on Bovine TB pre-movement testing of cattle moving to and from premises within Sole Occupancy Authorities (SOAs) which will come into effect after 30 September 2014. Mr James will discuss this issue further during the press briefing.
NFU Cymru will use the Pembrokeshire Show to encourage members, from across Wales, to help answer important questions about the 2014 harvest, by taking part in the annual harvest survey. Perkin Evans, NFU Cymru’s Combinable Crops and Horticulture Working Group Chairman, who farms locally, will be available during the press briefing.
Fifty percent of strokes could be avoided if high blood pressure is controlled – but how many of us know our blood pressure? NFU Cymru is offering visitors to its stand at Pembrokeshire Show the chance to have their blood pressure checked – for free. There will be a photo opportunity during the press briefing on Tuesday morning to photograph Mike Plumb, NFU Cymru Pembrokeshire County Chairman, having his blood pressure checked by the Stroke Association staff.
Also, the winner of the Idris Davies Memorial Award will be announced at approximately 4pm on the Tuesday of the show in the President’s pavilion reception area. See separate embargoed news release.
On the Wednesday of the show NFU Cymru is holding a Farmer Forum when both the NFU President and the NFU Cymru President will be available to answer questions on the current situation relating to the agricultural industry in the UK. At 2.30pm on Wednesday, 20 August 2014, Meurig Raymond, NFU President, and Stephen James, NFU Cymru President, both local Pembrokeshire farmers, will be at the NFU Cymru stand to discuss issues such as CAP reform, the RDP for Wales, bovine TB; as well as the current situation regarding the beef, lamb, dairy and arable sectors.
Also on the Wednesday evening, a charity reception will be held on the NFU Cymru stand on the Wednesday evening of the Show by the Pembrokeshire RABI Ladies Committee. Admission will be from 5.30pm and will cost £5, which includes a glass of wine and a cheese platter and all proceeds will go to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.
