NFU’s new full time county adviser in Holland (Lincolnshire) is Gordon Corner. Gordon took up his role on 18 May and will look after the NFU’s three southern Lincolnshire branches at Bourne, Boston and Spalding. He also assumes responsibility for horticulture in the East Midlands region, taking on the secretariat of the region’s Horticulture and Potatoes board and for covering policy issues in these sectors.

Joining the NFU in mid-May, Gordon said: “This is a job that I am very much looking forward to as it combines both arable and horticulture farming activity. There are some significant challenges facing farmers and growers and I am keen to ensure NFU is there to help them locally, nationally and on the international stage. The new farm support system, the Basic Payment Scheme, remains a difficult issue for many farmers as we approach the 15 June application deadline. This is particularly so for farmers and growers with complex operations in the south of Lincolnshire. Add to this the price volatility we’re experiencing at the farm gate and you have an industry under pressure.

“Before joining the NFU, I was in the Royal Navy for 33 years, spending much of my early career at sea on a variety of ships, fulfilling various roles including two appointments to HMY Britannia. I was also fortunate enough to have a number of appointments in Whitehall in “purple” appointments which saw me deal with a variety of other government departments. My new role is to coordinate all NFU activity and membership in Holland (Lincs) and I’m very much looking forward to meeting our members and talking to them about their industry and the challenges they face.”
