NFU legal board chairman re-elected

Fred Gooder, a farmer and grower from North Yorkshire, has been re-elected as chairman of the NFU Legal Board.

Trevor Foss, a former county chairman, who runs a mixed farm of around 200 acres in Northamptonshire and writes for NFU Countryside Magazine, was elected vice chairman.

"I am very pleased to have been re-elected again this year. Backed up by legal and technical expertise within the NFU and its panel of legal firms, they often make difficult decisions on funding for farmers on behalf of the other farmer subscribers to the Legal Assistance Scheme (LAS)" said Gooder.

"Many of the legal difficulties facing us have been seen before but with changes in farming practice, the more robust environment in which we operate, and the different ways in which businesses have developed means that the LAS itself evolves to meet the needs of its subscribers."

The LAS makes awards in excess of £1 million each year towards professional fees incurred by applicants with almost 90 per cent of NFU farmer and grower members subscribing to it.

Underpinning the Scheme are considerable financial reserves. Support is available for a wide range of disputes including contract, tenancy, employment, professional negligence, judicial reviews, planning appeals, Trading Standards and Environment Agency investigations and prosecutions.
