Poultry internship for Brazilian student
A postgraduate student from Brazil has spent the past two months researching poultry nutrition at Harper Adams University College.26-year-old Amanda Fernandes is in the second year of a Masters degree in the same subject at the University of S’o Paulo, Brazil.
She came to the University College in Shropshire to complete a research internship to gain extra experience during the vacation period.
Amanda said: ’I have been working on the poultry unit, investigating how we might be able to use plant extracts in the birds’ diets. This is a similar topic to what I am researching for my Masters.
’To do this I have been conducting practical experiments as well as laboratory work. The results are yet to be collated.’
Amanda is now considering the possibility of continuing her work at the University College with a three year PhD.
She added: ’I’ve really enjoyed my time at Harper Adams. The facilities are good and there is a great professional working environment for researchers.
’Before I came to the UK and Harper Adams I wasn’t nervous, I was looking forward to the challenge.
’I love the location, the surroundings are beautiful and it is really easy to get around on a bike. It’s made a nice change from the busy streets of S’o Paulo.’
