Rural businesses must be given the tools to compete, CLA urges

Whilst eyes are on the House of Lords this morning where the new Government will later reveal the legislation that it will now pursue, the CLA outlined key parliamentary priorities to ensure that rural communities continue to thrive.

Speaking at the Royal Bath and West Show, CLA Deputy President Ross Murray set out the CLA agenda on behalf of landowners, farmers and rural businesses for the new Government to stimulate economic activity in the rural South West. This included highlighting some of the major question marks hanging over many key policy areas.

Lord Fellowes of West Staffordshire, President of the 2015 Royal Bath and West Show, also addressed CLA members to discuss both the politics of the country and the politics of the countryside. He spoke of his long-spanning acting, directing and screenplay writing career, through which platforms he has sometimes commented on the heritage and fortunes of the English countryside.

CLA Deputy President Ross Murray said: “As the Government sets out their Queens Speech today in London, the role of rural businesses like those in this area must not be neglected. Ambitious plans for growth and jobs must be put in place to promote investment in businesses across the South West.

“The Government must deliver on promises for universal broadband and increased mobile coverage. Rural businesses must be given the tools to compete on an equal footing with urban based competitors.

“We need an approach to planning that gives businesses the confidence to make investments in the locally appropriate commercial and residential developments that will provide the jobs and homes necessary for the future.

Speaking on farming issues he said: “With less than 3 weeks to go until the 15th June deadline for farmers to submit applications for single farm payments, we remain focused on supporting Government and ensuring no businesses are left behind. We will also work to ensure payments are made on time and businesses do not lose out or suffer the worry of delays.

“We are delighted that Ministers have reiterated their commitment to the 25 year strategy for Bovine TB eradication. It is vital that they now press ahead and rollout the badger cull.”
