Latest figures have shown an encouraging increase in volume sales of fresh lamb and fresh burgers.

Figures for the four weeks to November 8 showed that fresh lamb sales were up 11.2 per cent, with leg roasting joints performing particularly well. Fresh burgers were up 8.2 per cent, mirroring the trend in the foodservice sector where they remain a growth category.

Nick Allen, AHDB director of market development, said: “The latest sales figures for fresh lamb and burgers are very encouraging.

“It’s important to remember that there are a number of long-term changes in lifestyle and purchase habits outside of health that continue to influence the way consumers buy and consume meat. These include the growth in one to two-person households and the continued drive for convenience.

“Initiatives such as our current ‘Midweek Mini-Roast’ television advertising campaign to promote Quality Standard Mark (QSM) and Red Tractor beef and lamb mini roasts are aimed at capitalising on these trends.

“In the interim, however, the latest sales volumes are welcome news.”
