Store cattle sale attracts buyers
Buyers from as far away Doncaster and Leicester were attracted by a very good entry of 475 at Halls’ first store cattle auction of the year at Bishops Castle yesterday (Thursday).
"Trade was better than most expected, with the high cost of feed being a major topic of conversation with purchasers," said David Bryan Jones from Halls
Overall average for steers was 165p per kilo and £752 per head with highs of £1,070 for a 640 kilo British Blue from A. and J. Speke, Upper Woodbatch and 213p per kilo for a pair of Charolais from J2 Farming of Oswestry.
Heifers averaged 153p per kilo and £650 per head to £898 for a Limousin from N. Sneade of Old Hall and 189p per kilo for a Limousin from T. E. Thomas and Co, Melingrug.
A smaller entry of feeding bulls averaged 155p per kilo and £675 to peak at £898 for a 610 kilo Charolais from Coleg Powys, Fronlas and 178p per kilo for a 310 kilo Limousin from Aston Hall Farms.
Other leading prices for steers were: Welsh Black: 176p per kilo for two 360 kilo steers from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Llettygynfach. Charolais: £1,050 per head for two 630 kilo steers from Messrs A. and J. Speke, Upper Woodbatch and 213p per kilo for two 270 kilo steers from Messrs J2 Farming, Hisland. Limousin: £1,045 per head for one 630 kilo steer from Messrs D. E. Brown and Son, The Waen and 189p per kilo for one 320 kilo steer from Mr B. W. Gittins, Rhespass. Blonde D’Aquitaine:£955 per head for one 700 kilo steer from Messrs F. G. Windsor and Sons, Kempton Farm and £200p per kilo for one 340 kilo steer from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Llettygynfach. British Blue: £1,070 per head for one 640 kilo steer from Messrs A. and J. Speke and 181p per kilo for one 430 kilo steer from Mr M. W. Hamer, Corricks Rise.
Heifers: Charolais: £882 per head for one 500 kilo heifer from Mr R. W. Lllewellyn, Lynwood Farm and 177p per kilo for one 355 kilo heifer from Messrs J2 Farming. Simmental: 159p per kilo for two 410 kilo heifers from Messrs J. and J. M. Ball, Potseething Farm. Limousin: £898 per head for two 550 kilo heifers from Mr N. Sneade, Old Hall Farm and 189p per kilo for one 310 kilo heifer from Messrs T. E. Thomas and Co, Melingrug. Blonde D’Aquitaine:£868 per head and 185p per kilo for one 470 kilo heifer from Messrs F. G. Windsor and Sons. British Blue:
£820 per head and 182p per kilo for one 450 kilo heifer from Mr M. W. Hamer, Corricks Rise. Aberdeen Angus: 162p per kilo for one 345 kilo heifer from Messrs Aston Hall Farms.
Bishops Castle and District Quality Cattle Association’s spring sale of store cattle is being held on Thursday, February 17, with entries closing on Monday, February 7.
