Suckled calves peak at £1,255 per head at Bishops Castle

Top quality genuine suckled calves sold for more than £1,000 per head and £3 per kilo at Bishops Castle and District Quality Cattle Association’s successful sale of autumn and spring born calves and weanlings on October 24.

Competitive bidding by a good attendance of buyers boosted the trade throughout at Bishops Castle Auction. The Jack Bedell Cup for the bunch of four or more steers or heifers born in 2013 that achieved the highest price per head went to Messrs J. A. Wood and Sons of Kinnerton. The winning bunch of four Limousin steers weighed 320 kilos and made £1,030 per head.

Overall averages for steers were 268p per kilo and £900 per head with highs of £1,255 for a British Blue from W. R. B. Jones, Brynawelon and 322p per kilo for a Limousin from J. A. Wood and Sons.

Heifers averaged 266p per kilo and £835 to peak at £1,050 for a British Blue, again from W. R. B. Jones and an amazing 368p kilo for a pair of 280 kilo Limousins from J. A. Wood and Sons.

Other leading prices were: Limousin cross steers: £1,100 for a 445 kilo steer from Messrs M. and A. Powell, Drefor and 322p per kilo for a 320 kilo steer from Messrs J. A. Wood and Sons. Blonde D’Aquitaine: £930 for two 390 kilo steers from Messrs N. and K. Unwin, Panty Crasty and 275p per kilo for two 295 kilo steers from Messrs F. J. Owens and Co, Lletygynfach. British Blue cross: £1,255 for a 475 kilo steers from Messrs W. R. B. Jones, Brynawelon and 312p per kilo for a 295 kilo steer from Messrs J. A. Wood and Sons.


Heifers: Limousin cross: £970 for a 410 kilo heifer from Messrs M. and A. Powell, Drefor and 343p per kilo for eight 265 kilo heifers from Messrs J. A. Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm. Blonde D’Aquitaine: £730 for two 350 kilo heifers and 220p per kilo for two 330 kilo heifers from Messrs N. and K. Unwin, Panty Crasty. British Blue cross: £1,050 for a 435 kilo heifer from Messrs W. R. B. Jones, Brynawelon and 368p per kilo for two 280 kilo heifers from Messrs J. A. Wood and Sons.
