Taking the Countryside to the City

NFU Cymru will help bring the countryside and agriculture right to the heart of the city over the weekend for the Cardiff Country Fair - with celebrity farmer Johnny Ball and his Let’s Talk Farming Roadshow set to visit.

Taking place on 27-28 September at Cardiff Castle the event, now in its second year, will showcase the essence of rural Wales, celebrating the best of farming, food and the countryside. The event will see some of the best examples of livestock from across Wales coming to Cardiff.

NFU Cymru Communications Adviser, Sarah Jones said, “People are becoming increasingly inquisitive of where their food comes from. The Cardiff Country Fair is a progressive step by a local authority to celebrate the countryside and help answer the hugely important question of food provenance.

“The event is a great opportunity to reconnect town and country. In years gone by most townsfolk had some connection through family ties with farming but that link has become increasingly tenuous as the number of people engaged in the agricultural industry has, over the years, contracted. This event is a step in re-establishing that connection and to creating a better understanding of how and where our food comes from and the high standards to which it has been produced.”

Mrs Jones continued, “Once again this year NFU Cymru is delighted to be associated with this event which will be an opportunity to showcase to increasingly discerning consumers our ever widening range of Welsh products which are of top quality, natural and wholesome. If the Welsh food industry is to continue to build on, what is after all, one of Wales’ success stories then our farming industry will need the support of the consuming public in Cardiff and beyond. In return Welsh farming can provide not just top quality food but can contribute positively to food security, economic and community development, environmental sustainability and possibly above all the health of our nation. So back Welsh farming.”
