Between 30 and 40 cows have been stolen from a farm near Wells, Somerset - with Police fearing the cattle could be passed on as meat, despite the animals having been wormed a few days earlier.

Between 30 and 40 cows were taken from an agricultural cattle shed in the Henton to the area west of the city.

The theft took place overnight between 6pm on January 15 and 7.30am yesterday morning.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is urging people to be on the lookout for the cattle, and to report any incidents of somebody trying to sell meat under suspicious circumstances.

A spokesperson said: "The cattle had been wormed on Saturday (January 14) and are therefore not fit for human consumption for several weeks.

"Anyone with information on this incident, or if you have been offered to buy meat in suspicious circumstances, please call us now on 101 and quote crime reference number 5217010783."

On 13 January, eight cows were stolen from a farm in Wareham, Dorset in a night-time raid.
