Two winter barley trials yield first Harvest Results

Two AHDB Recommended List (RL) winter barley trials have been harvested, yielding the first results from the current trials.

The sites were harvested on 17 July in Hampshire and 18 July in Lincolnshire and tend to be harvested early. Last year, these sites were harvested on 14 July and 16 July, respectively.

Early results

At this stage, it is too early to draw firm conclusions on the performance of specific varieties or the season.

Across the two trials, the average yield for the control varieties is 10.62 t/ha. This figure is above the five-year average of 9.26 t/ha and is similar to the high yields reported last year.

Interpreting results

The yield values show the performance of varieties this season at these sites. When selecting varieties, the five-year average is a better indication of variety performance over a range of seasons.

For brewing varieties, quality and market requirements take precedence over yield alone.

The six-row hybrid feed varieties have performed well in these two trials, topping the yield table.

As additional trial data becomes available, the results table will be updated.
