Union expresses disappointment at post loss

NFU Cymru has expressed its deep disappointment to North Wales Police Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Geraint Anwyl about the sudden and totally unexpected loss of the post of Farm Community Liaison officer held by PC Dorian Roberts.

Mr Huw Alun Evans, Chairman of Meirionnydd NFU Cymru said, "Dorian Roberts had a significantly important role in crime prevention and education on farms in North Wales. He has done a cracking job since his appointment in 2005. At the meeting NFU Cymru were told that the decision by Chief Superintendent Geraint Anwyl to axe the post was purely a financial one.

The Chief Superintendant pointed out that rural areas are well covered by community beat managers (CBM) and community support officers (CSO). They are being actively encouraged to get to know their local farmers. Full details of names and contact numbers are to be found on the North Wales police website: www.north-wales.police.uk.

Mr Evans added, "We are disappointed that the Divisional Commander could not be persuaded to change his mind. Although we are firmly behind the idea of CBMs and CSOs there is now the loss of a person to look at the overall picture of crime problems on our farms and a point of contact who covers a wide area. We have urged the North Wales police to review their decision urgently particularly as their strategy is one of crime prevention and intelligence gathering. After all farmers are rate payers and should have a say in the policing of North Wales."

"In the meantime we wish Dorian Roberts well in his new post in Llangefni but hope to see him back soon in his current post"
