Consumers urged to buy British as foreign sausage meat is linked to increases in hepatitis E liver disease

A well known British pig farmer is urging consumers to buy British, after foreign sausage meat was linked with a large increase in cases of hepatitis E liver disease.
A total of 869 people in England and Wales contracted the disease last year, compared with 274 in 2010. Tests carried out by scientists at Public Health England indicate that the virus is similar to one found in pig farms across Europe but not in the United Kingdom.
Prominent British pig farmer Richard Longthorp, who is a former chairman of the National Pig Association, has said that consumers should look for the British Red Tractor to ensure food safety.
