England’s oldest horse race won by first time entrants

First-time entrants Tracey Corrigan and her fiancé Richard Mumford proved a surprise package when they overcame an experienced field to win England's oldest horse race.

The couple, from Scarborough in North Yorkshire, beat another 16 riders to win the Kiplingcotes Derby, a four-mile race run in the Yorkshire Wolds near Market Weighton. The race has taken place annually since 1519. Nearly 1,000 spectators turned up to watch the 2014 event.

Tracey, who had never even attended the race before this year, raced to an unassailable lead on her horse, Willie. Richard, who started riding only four years ago, finished second on his mount, Bob.

Ian Hinchliffe has this video report of the race.
