500 cattle evacuated ‘before they drown’ as water levels rise

A farmer launched a major operation to evacuate 500 cattle as water levels surged in flood-hit parts of Somerset.

Friends and neighbours rallied around to help James Winslade shift livestock from West Yeo Farm in Moorland.

The move came as the huge pumping exercise continued yesterday, as levels rose by half-an-inch per hour over 24 hours, and two feet in places when a defence was breached.
