Dairy herd outpacing NZ population growth

There are now 1.5 dairy cattle for every New Zealander as the nation's dairy herd continues to grow faster than the human population.

The latest figures from Statistics New Zealand show the number of dairy cattle has increased slightly over the last year to 6.6 million.

"Compared with recently released population census figures over the same seven-year period, the dairy cattle population has grown over five times faster," agriculture statistics manager Hamish Hill said.
