Drop in cattle trade hits hay and silage prices hard

It's been another great year for hay and silage. While full sheds and pits come as a huge relief to farmers in counties that suffered most during the fodder crisis this time last year, the combination of a surplus and a depressed beef sector has resulted in prices for top quality 4x4s falling by 25pc to as little as €20/bale.

"It's a great crop but the way the cattle trade is people just can't afford to buy it," said Wexford farmer Pat Redmond.
