Farm fined for discharging undertreated turkey waste water

An Amherstburg poultry farm will have to pay $75,000 for discharging inadequately treated turkey waste water into the Long Marsh Drain.

Belwood Poultry Ltd. was convicted in a Windsor court Monday of failing to comply with an environmental approval for an industrial sewage works under the Ontario Water Resources Act and was fined $60,000 plus a $15,000 victim fine surcharge.

“It’s a significant conviction,” said Ministry of the Environment spokeswoman Kate Jordan.

“The money is significant.”
