Farmers block highways across Greece

Greece's farmers have blocked highways across the country after launching an anti-austerity campaign as the government backs its spending cuts.

The angry farmers blocked highways mostly in central and northern Greece consisting of the country’s main road artery on Monday at 2:00 p.m. local time (1200 GMT) for an hour, directly increasing journey lengths on the first day of the week.

The protest comes in retaliation to six months of unpaid wages, government austerity and a new draft tax law that increases tax on the farmers’ incomes and fuel for farm vehicles.
