Farmers block roads demanding water

As the demand for immediate release of water from Vaigai dam did not elicit positive response at the recent farmers' grievance meet in Madurai, more than 3,000 farmers expressed their displeasure by blocking roads here on Sunday. The protest, which lasted for around four hours, affected traffic movement on Madurai-Trichy highway.

The protesters were single-crop farmers from seven localities around Melur. While farmers refused to call off the blockade and refused to talk with revenue officials, V Balakrishnan, district superintendent of police, reached the spot and started talks with the protesters.
