Farmers counting costs of storm

Marlborough farmers are facing huge cleanup bills after floodwaters raged through paddocks, taking out stock and fencing.

While many had moved stock to higher ground on Thursday, floodwaters quickly rose beyond expectations.

Ward sheep and beef farmer Kevin Loe said farmers in Ward had braved wind, earthquakes and now floods.

"There have only been a couple of times in my life when the [Flaxbourne] river has been so high," Loe said. "In other times the water has been still and calm. This time the water across the paddocks was like a raging torrent. It seemed to have so much force."
