Farmers split on benefits of Japan-Australia free trade deal

The Japan-Australia free trade agreement has split the farming sector, with beef producers welcoming the pact while dairy and pork farmers expressed disappointment with the deal.

The National Farmers’ Federation said the historic agreement, struck on Monday night Australian time after seven years of negotiation, fell short of expectations.

“We recognise the historical significance of the agreement. However, we are disappointed with the overall outcomes for agriculture with a number of sectors facing marginal improvements or limited commercial gains,” federation president Brent Finlay said.
