Farmers urged to look for cattle illness

The Australian Veterinary Association says the attrition of state government staff at diagnostic facilities during recent years is exacerbating the delay in diagnosing the mystery illness killing hundreds of cattle.

The Department of Primary Industries has conducted blood samples, autopsies and environmental tests at several properties in the western district where cattle have died, but is yet to determine a cause.

The President of the AVA, Dr Ben Gardiner, says his association is very concerned about the disease which has had three separate outbreaks since 2006.
