Fukushima aims to revive agriculture with no-soil farming
Takeo Endo, a Kawauchi farmer who once supplied the imperial family with rice, is spearheading a group that’s pioneering a project that aims to grow food without having to plant on soiled ground; farming in a sealed-off hydroponics factory instead.
By April, the construction of an aluminum-clad, soccer field-sized building will have been completed and is expected to produce some 8,000 heads of lettuce for every farming cycle. Other factories may be built in the Fukushima farming village for other produce.
