Hovis abandons British-only wheat pledge after heavy rain
The bread maker, which is owned by Premier Foods, is expected to start using EU grain this weekend and is likely to cut its British wheat buying by a third over the course of this year.
The move is another blow for British farmers, who are still feeling the impact of the incessant rainfall which made 2012 the second wettest year on record. Last year’s heavy rain cost farmers an estimated £1.3bn.
